Talking with Two Titans of Our Industry

“If you take it from one person it is called stealing, but if you take it from everyone it is called research.” -Old Wall Street joke

One thing that Sonu Varghese, VP, Global Macro Strategist, and I have started to do this year is conduct interviews leveraging Spaces on X. A “Space” is simply a live format discussion (no video, only audio) and you can listen right on the X app. We’ve been getting thousands of listeners each month and it is a great way to have a quick conversation and let all your friends listen in.

Well, over the past two weeks we’ve had two of my all-time favorite market minds join us for some amazing discussions in Jim Paulsen and Sam Stovall. Jim spent 40 years as a Chief Market Strategist, retired for a bit, but is now back sharing his thoughts on his Substack, while Sam is the U.S. Equity Strategist with CFRA Research.

I hear all the time from people how they like how I communicate or how I do research. Well, what I’m doing is nothing new! In fact, safe to say that two people I’ve mimicked more than anyone else in my career have been Jim and Sam. Go read the quote up top one more time for more on my thoughts here 😉.

As a fellow market strategist, Jim is someone I’ve watched my whole career. I remember watching him on TV twenty years ago and I always liked how he looked right at the camera, smiled, and said thanks for having me. Watch a lot of TV and you’ll be surprised how many guests just dive right into the question and, in a lot of cases, they just look miserable to be there. He was (and still is) always perfectly relaxed and confident in his answers. I was literally just on TV today and I started the conversation by asking if anyone had any Taylor Swift tickets to the upcoming Indianapolis concert for crying out loud! That bit of fun came from trying to be like Jim.

But that’s just the friendly hello. Then comes the wisdom. Our conversation with Jim was awesome. The best part was this was his first Spaces ever (noticed the tech issues he had early on 😁), and it was so cool that a legend in our industry is back to sharing things using a totally new medium that didn’t exist a few years ago.

What I’ve always admired about Jim was his ability to take the latest data, create a unique chart or table, and clearly and simply give his take or opinion. I do this all the time, and I learned it from Jim.

In our discussion, we covered why this bull market probably has a lot longer to go, why we expect the market to continue to broaden out, why the S&P 500 has been like the Philadelphia Eagle’s Tush Push for decades, some favorite lessons learned, and so much more.

You can listen to our whole discussion with Jim here.

Lastly, and most definitely not least, is Sam Stovall. I first saw Sam in like 2003 or 2004 down in Miami at a conference and I will never forget what he did. All these boring and stuffy types were up there, simply putting the room to sleep, but Sam gets up there and tells joke after joke. I have no clue what he said back then, although I’m sure I learned a lot. I always do listening to Sam. But I know how he made me feel and 20 years later I know he made me feel good. I present all the time and I use lots of jokes and stories to get my point across, just like I’ve watched Sam do.

Sam’s father was a legend in our industry and we discussed with him why the 🍎 didn’t fall too far from the tree, what to expect during year three of a bull market, valuations, sectors, and some of his favorite jokes.

Listen to it all here.

Thanks one more time to Jim and Sam for joining us and sharing all they’ve learned after many decades in this industry. And lastly, thank you for sharing (probably without even knowing it) how to be successful in this industry with me!

Lastly, I joined Scott Wapner on CNBC’s Closing Bell on Friday and I even quoted Sam!
